equality, diversity and inclusivity in design.
Nottingham Trent University | Product Design Industry Liasson Committee
2022
In September 2022, I organised and moderated a panel discussion on Decoloniality in Design at Nottingham Trent University's Product Design Industry Liaison Committee (ILC). This event brought together industry professionals, NTU faculty, and alumni to discuss the integration of decolonial practices within design education and the industry. The panel featured diverse voices, including ex-alumni, a senior lecturer, and a barrister, to provide a comprehensive understanding of decolonisation. The discussion framework covered topics from coloniality and lived experiences to decolonial praxis, ensuring a structured and meaningful conversation.
Through this panel, I engaged in self-directed professional development, un-learning and re-learning to phase out colonial perspectives and reposition my knowledge. This commitment has enriched my teaching and mentoring practices, fostering a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Key takeaways from the panel include:
Transformation requires collective effort and collaboration.
Create safe spaces for honest, uncomfortable conversations.
Design with social realities in mind, exploring non-capital-focused models.
By embracing these themes, I aim to contribute to decolonial and anti-racist practices in design education and the industry, fostering change and growth within both fields.
