design and innovation in business.

Nottingham Trent University | Global Summer School

2022

I co-developed a two-week summer school with Kathryn Pashley aimed at non-design students, highlighting the importance and application of design and innovation within a business context. The program catered to students from various disciplines such as business, marketing, and law. During the first week, students learned design fundamentals, including sketch ideation, creative model making, and opportunity framing. In the second week, students formed groups to develop an innovative design project based on global trends, using their newly acquired skills, and culminating in a final presentation.

We structured the program to build fundamental skills daily, creating an accessible learning toolbox. The workshops emphasised a playful and accessible approach to design, underscoring the significance of design skills in developing innovative solutions. Even if students don't use these skills directly in their future careers, they gain appreciation and knowledge for collaborating with designers. The summer school emphasized collaborative learning, with most activities done in groups to mirror industry teamwork. This approach highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of design, resulting in unique projects and fostering a creative mindset. The program successfully demonstrated the value of design skills in various sectors, promoting teamwork and innovative thinking.
