The Inheritance Chair project embodies the concept of Design Inheritance through the transformation of a traditional object. By choosing a universally recognised archetype, the chair, it explores emotional connections and the significance of belongings across time and place.
Drawing inspiration from the 18th-century Windsor chair, the design process evolved through sketching and 3D modelling, adapting to pandemic restrictions. This project delves into the themes of provenance to inheritance, imagining the journey of a family heirloom, in this instance a piece of furniture, worn and beyond repair, being deconstructed and reborn into a new piece.
Through this speculative exploration, the Inheritance Chair not only preserves the essence of its original form and history but also introduces a narrative of renewal and continuity, suggesting a new perspective in design where historical narratives are interwoven with modern practice.
